THE END OF PROBLEM SLEUTH.

03/10/08 - 03/10/09.

3 detectives
365 days
1621 pages
1915 images
142 megabytes
45,000 words
0 sacred urns toppled
0 mystic ruins desecrated
0 hallowed tombs defiled

A couple hundred people tuned in on the first day. A couple hundred thousand tuned in on the last.

The beginning was humble in ways that go beyond a simple reader count. Humble might not even be the right word. The word's blade might need to be dulled further -- from something used to slice butter, to something used to ladle paste into the mouth of an infant.

I was wondering what sort of story to make, so I drew a detective on a blank canvas. Then I thought he should be in a room, of course. Probably a detective's office, because that's where detectives usually are. He needed a phone and a gun. Clearly those two items would alone suffice, I thought. The wall over there looked a little blank so I drew a safe. A window for ambience. A door for exit, which may or may not have been locked; I wasn't sure yet.

What I was also oblivious to was the two other detectives who would show up later, and to their adjacent offices. I was oblivious to the world of imagination, and the desk-made fort that would be its gateway. I didn't know the window lead there either, and I didn't know you could only get to that place I didn't know about if it was plugged in. I didn't know about the candy in his pocket, the dames in their dollhouse, the kingpin in his ship, or the weasel in his palace.

Those I's would be dotted by your suggestions, and the T's would be crossed by my reaction to them. It was a storytelling game of cat and mouse, and you presumably just finished reading the aftermath of our year-long, Tom and Jerry-style rampage through the house.

And if at the beginning you told me I would have a group of characters fight a single giant monster every day for almost six months, I would have told you... well, I would have told you that sounds awesome! But then I probably wouldn't have done it. Because I would have known I was going to do it. And what fun would that have been?

It's hard to believe it's done, I'm sure mostly for me personally. If you do the math, you'll note I produced an average of more than 5 images per day, every single day for that year-long stretch. In retrospect, it was a matter of routine inseparable from day to day existence. I didn't notice the effort, and I didn't notice the year. It wasn't a labor. It was just what I did.

But I guess it's more than just a shift in habitual momentum. There's a note of melancholy. These detectives won't be up to their antics anymore (unless I make deliberate exceptions to their retirement, of course). It seems strange to me that these characters have become so well defined in my mind, even though they've never uttered a single word. It was never supposed to be that way. It was just supposed to be about a cruddy-looking dude in his office.

But that said, I'm pretty excited to get working on something new. And maybe, if you're not all that busy, we could take the first step of this amazing new journey together.

Thanks for reading!

- Andrew.

Regardless of whether I really do end up being commenter number 200 or not, I'd like to say that that was quite the adventure, and I completely understand what you said about it in your blog. It all started in a room. I guess it could be a box, really. There was nothing outside of it. Once the suggestions poured in and we came up with ideas as to what came outside the box, and why the things inside the box were where they were, everything took flight and what began as a simple doodle of a detective in a room became an epic journey worthy of a toast, and maybe some candy corn. All the best--cheers.

Oh--a page to myself?

My responses take too long.

Andrew, I don't care if your next adventure is about a flying purple leprechaun--I'll be back.

Anonymous said...

I am so proud to have been a part of this since last year. In all that time I think two of my suggestions got posted. I'm so honored to be a part of this epic.
I suggested Check Yo'self Jonah at the right time. I'll be waiting for the next one.

I can't believe it's actually over.
To tell you the truth, PS was actually the highlight of my day. As soon as I'd come home from school, I'd drop my books, come bounding up the stairs with utter disregard for my poor dog, flick on Liam (my laptop, obviously) and head straight for the MSPA page.

Every entry was filled with a childlike anxiety-- you really never knew what would happen next. Would one of our beloved harlots finally stand up to the cruel Madame? Would Demonhead Mobster Kingpin pull some DEUS-EX-ATTACKA from the depths of some malevolent pocket? Would Godhead Pickle Inspector finally do something?!

I adored Problem Sleuth, and I wait with bated breath for your next creation.

The last bit of this was both beautiful and horrible, like dominoes that were carefully set up falling down to open a door a few feet from where it started in a rube goldbergian manner that went countless places. It went through windows, desk forts and Legitimate Establishments. One can see the setup, but has only a vague idea how things will happen. Every time someone walks by and sees it one must take them to the beginning and follow it, just because it cannot be explained why anything is funny without doing so.

Now you get too look at your downed dominoes and let out a satisfied sigh. The you will begin to build something new, while being barked at to punch them in the snout or ride them like a mechanical bull.

Good luck.

NOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Ever since I was linked here from Thinkin Lincoln, I have made a it a top priority to agress those who say nay to your genius with my arsenal of my set of keys, Pez uzi, candy corn handgun, tootsie roll shotgun, and jawbreaker cannon (of course, after quickly retrieving my arms from the safe). Even the safety of the Captain Snoop bust cannot be number one. Thank you for your kind gift to us all. This story has had more entertaining twists and turns than the infinitely stuck portal-windows. While I understand it would be difficult, I hope that you print this adventure in book form. I would certainly buy it as soon as it was on the shelf. I ask that you continue your great work and not drive your infinite candy mechas into the sunset, never to be heard again. But if you do, may you have a teacup full of elf tears and a hat full of candy corn.

I discovered Problem Sleuth sometime in the last two or three weeks.
Since then, every update made my day that much more EPIC.
PS was a brilliant new medium that showed exactly how awesome and organic the internet could be - nobody knew how it would end at the onset. Kind of like life, but to the power of Incredible.
Here's to exemplifying Imagination, Pulchritude, and Vim.

After reading MSPaintAdventures, I started showing my friends the comic.
I would use your images and animated gifs for image boards to bring about your style of humor.
Hell, I even started drawing on MSPaint again, even if you stopped using it after the first page.
I thank you for all the laughs, the suspense, the sheer epic win that is your comic has given me something to pull myself through the day.

Also, your other comics are flippin' BOSS.

I was hooked on it the first day I found your site. I was so hooked I literally was waiting for the new updates to come out to see where the story took me. And you know what? Every page was pure awesomeness. I wasted a lot of my time updating myself on what was going on each day on PS's adventure, but the time was oh so well worth spent.

But I REALLY didn't expect the ending to be like that.

Every once in a while, the Universe requires a new hero. Some are made through speeches, others through their heroic war efforts. Some are made through truly epic adventures.

Some... through MSPaint adventures.

Problem Sleuth shall forever remain in my mind as the wittiest, most random, and most original idea on the internet.

And the REASON Microsoft puts MSPaint onto every computer.

'Problem Sleuth' is simply put just a brilliant piece of work. Seriously!

It takes a lot of talent to take all those clever, weird, stupid and unexpected suggestions from the readers/players and turn that into something that still is coherent and has it's own absurd logic. Thankfully, you got that talent, and lots of it!

Good luck with the next adventure. I'm tempted to suggest some new setting, but I got enough common sense to not go down that path.

Thanks for giving this to us!

I clicked on this randomly thinking it was a Ryan North text-game side project, but when I looked up and realized that 2 hours had gone by I realized that a) this was someone's flagship project; b) I had 40 min to make/eat dinner and get some sleep; c) I was unphasably happy, for the entire duration of the adventure, even when I wasn't reading it. It was this constant thought in the back of my head, and when everyone was bummed out at work my only thought was that if I had some Tootsie Rolls I could make everyone's day with a Frankenstein pose.

I can sum my feelings about this webcomic to one phrase:

TheLegacy: Fondly regard MSPaintAdventures

Anyway, fantastic work, and I hope a just as good (if not, better) story comes out in the near future. I think you could make a decent living off of this webcomic, to be honest, like those at LFG/LiCD or Penny Arcade, and putting up advertisements on other sites could help. :)

One thing though; I'm really happy to have had the opportunity to have inserted (and have used!) a (series of) commands during the end of the story. It really did add a feeling of inclusion.

Keep it up!

None other made me laugh more, make my day brighter, baffle me greater, confuse me further, make me think harder, enjoy randomness better, love humour deeper, hope higher, or care for another webcomic.
Geez, it was great, fun, and exciting. I joined in August, and had to catch up, and boy did it seem like this was one elaborate planned out story. But then I saw the "Submit a suggestion" button and couldn't believe that I could suggest what could possibly happen next.

Wow, will I ever forget laughing so hard that I fell off my own chair? Probably not. What an amazing adventure this has been. Problem Sleuth is absolutely hilarious, and ridiculously awesome. When I read the end of it, I actually almost cried, sad that such a funny and brilliant comic has come to an end.
And yet, I also laughed, laughed that the three sleuths had been about five yards away from the exit, and yet it took about 22 chapters to finish the tale. And what an epic 22 chapters that was.

Thanks for everything you have done, something to look forward to, something to cheer me up, and something to just get me laughing out loud. I never will quite forget to ride stuff like a mechanical bull.

MS Paint Adventures is perhaps the most ambitious webcomic I have ever read. The approach is simple and familiar, the storyline is as compelling as it is convoluted, and the humor is never lacking. The controlled chaos that becomes the lives of the characters is displayed intelligently, with clever and ingenious insight on the author's part. Because of the negative connotations associated with MS Paint, one might initially assume the illustrations would lack in artistic ability; to the contrary, the animation is exceptionally well-orchestrated (in a 'hard-boiled' manner). The one criticism I offer is that the comic ended too soon. I enjoyed reading it so much, I don't want it to end!

I've been watching this comic ever since September or so. When I first saw this, I read about 500-something pages in two days. Not only was your comic addicting, but it was funny as hell. I shared this with as many friends as I could, and I must've gotten 10 more people addicted to this as well.

Keep it up. I really want to see where the next one's going, and this time all your fans will be able to see it from the start :)

And yeah, MS Paint Adventure Fans are probably home to some of the smartest people. Ya gotta have brains to get through all that weird puzzle shit.

I am of two minds here. While on the one hand I am glad that you were able to finish it so nicely, on the other hand I am slightly sad that the Problem Sleuth saga is over, because I came every day hoping for new pages. Congratulations!

I do look forward to any new project you dish out, PS or no.

Like some of the people whose comments I've read, I started reading MSPA when I clicked the link from VG Cats.

Holy Crap.

Andrew, you had me at "You already have arms, numbnuts!" Every chance I got I would log on and check to see if MSPA had a new update. Now that PS is over (almost), I'm kind of sad... but I know that the next adventure will be spectacular. Maybe next time I'll throw in a suggestion or two.

*raises glass with everyone else*

Andrew, thank you for guiding us along this wild journey.

About two months ago, I was introduced to a webpage called MS Paint Adventures. Since then, this comic has led me through twists and turns of EPIC proportions. Time and common sense were turned on their heads as hundreds of seemingly unrelated events slowly built up into a climax that can only be summed up in one word:
EPIC.
Through this word, I convey to you my thoughts each time I pressed those little blue words at the bottom of the panel. I could not spread the word fast enough about this awesome comic that should be viewed by one and all. Although I'm sad that it's over, I am still left with the memories of what was, and will still be, the greatest webcomic in the history of the internet.
Well, at least until your next creation.
Kudos.

Andrew, sir, you are amazing!
Regardless of how much of the content you gathered from the suggestions of your fans, the players, I must say that what you brought to the "game" was incredible on its own. Even if no one had told you to make the desks into forts, where would we be without the premise you gave us all? It is because of your abilities to weave a story together from the tattered rags that are the suggestions that Problem Sleuth was such a huge success!

The level of connection that I felt to the sleuths is amazing, considering that they never said a word between the three of them. The catharsis that I have experience at the (near) end of their epic tale is unparalleled, especially considering that I only just started maybe five or six weeks in.

My jaunty hat is off to you, good sir.

Andrew,

I congratulate you on keeping me entertained for what must be one of the longest on-going webcomic stories I have read to date. I would like to point out that I too found your comic via VG-Cats (that silhouette of the 3 detectives looks strangely promising) and I would say I over the course of hours read from the start of PS to around the Candy-corn vampire stretch during Halloween. While I am truly sad to see such a great webcomic go, I look forward with baited breath to your next installment of MSPA. All you need is a simple idea and 1 drawing, we will do (most of the rest). I tip my class to you fine sir.

Sorry for the double post apparently "we are sorry there is a error with your request" roughly translates to "your comment was posted" also.. class = glass. I double failed there.

I gotta say, That was the best Ms paint adventure yet. it was more linear than the earlier stuff (like bards quest) but didn't feel pre-determined. the artwork was better too. And you just gotta love prohibition era slang. I can't wait for the next one!

Problem Sleuth has been an incredible adventure from start to finish. I liked taking a while to see how your artistic skills and mastery of the English language have evolved from Jail Break, until now. And that you managed to keep a somewhat cohesive story based on the suggestions of fans is a near godly feat.

-LA: Remove hat and bow before AH

You are a marvelous artist and a great writer, can't wait to see what comes next.

Oddly enough, the first day I stumbled onto this gem was the day of the CANDY CORN VAMPIRE. Little did I know that chapters later, with proper utilization of spontaneously apparent pumpkins, it would be among the most badass things ever.

The lovely thing about this rambling madhouse is that its logic, though entirely ridiculous, is coherent, and that everyone and everything under the sway of that logic is significant. The most brief mentioning, the silliest of tropes, the tiniest of details are woven back into the plot in epic and absolutely pivotal ways.

Kudos and bravo for a delightful ride, good sir. The next show's sure to be a mustache-twister.

Andrew i dont know if you have ever seen t5his iflm but you should, its called "after hours"

its about a guy and the worst night of his life, all these random things keep happening ot him and all he wants to do is get home.

the plot is a lot simular in style to how your comics go, as if someone did the same yecnique of random idears and repeating in jokes nad itmes and made a film out of it. its quite dated tho but still an interesting one to watch.

Thank you for allowing me to take this rollercoaster of wonder with you.

As one of the few original things on the internet, it makes me happy to have found the website so close to the start of the long boat ride of imagination and fulfillment.

Cheers, I look forward to your next creative love child.

My Jocose Honey receptacle, it runneth over. This was (and shall long remain) a work of true surreal genius. I started reading it back in November, and had a lot of crazy f un to catch up on, but even once I had done so, the daily updates never got dull, or too slow. I await your next project with breath that is distinctly baited (although by what, I have no idea - possible the corpse of a huge, bloated whale - they could be used as bait, right?).

Anonymous said...

An absolutely incredible journey through the depths of possibility. Problem Sleuth isn't a detective, he's an explorer plumbing the darkest reaches of the unknown.

I, uh, may have mixed up my metaphors a bit there.

Well, anyway, a superb adventure, a thrilling voyage through disconnected lands of weirdness, all held together by mechanical bulls, trap offices, and punched snouts.

My favourite themes were Problem Sleuth's diplomatic attacks (Impromptu Caucus and Fair Shake come to mind as the cleverest, after, of course, Sleuth Diplomacy)and how you managed to make so many variations on concepts such as "person trapped in office" and "gun/key". The abundance of obscure synonyms was also particularly enjoyable.

I can't wait to see what you come up with next.

PS: Of all the gags in this comic, there's one that has refused to succumb to my repeated Googling. What's with the -hearst suffix for Porkhearst, Q*Hearst, Wifehearst, and Son/Bathearst?

When I look at the EPILOGUE, I hear the ending music to Legend of Zelda 3 in my head.

I must say, that was amazing. Make sure to but a llama in your next epic.

I'm so amazed, that was by far the greatest webcomic I have ever read. It was funny, original, and had a great storyline too, something it is so hard for funny comics to pull off. I will always hold problem sleuth near my heart, and eagerly anticipate whats to come next. Thank you so much. ~Izzy

I first stumbled upon MSPA half-way through PS' heroic exploits.
Ever since, this has been my number one bookmark, and the first thing I checked in the morning and after work.
Thank you ever so much for giving life to this amazing cast of characters. I wish you wealth and happiness, and I'll keep on visiting, in hope of a new masterpiece.

It is with a heavy heart that I mourn the end of the greatest webcomic I have ever read. Your magnificent tale of detectives, mobsters, alternate universes, and leaving offices has ended. It has left with a part of my heart. I can only hope your next piece can reach the same level of masterpiece that Problem Sleuth had, yet I am certain that you will surpass it. And you will probably do so with a great deal less hats.

That will be the most impessive feat of all.

With much love, I congratulate you.

When I walked into the library to find my boyfriend giggling ridiculously at the screen, I didn't know exactly what I would find.

I thank the gods it was this.

From the moment I looked over his shoulder with a slight "WTF?" on my face only to have him drag me into the outrageous world of PS, I knew I had stumbled onto something. I just wasn't sure what it was. From that moment on, I was hooked. Countless Belly of the Whale inside jokes later, it became a link in our relationship and the humor of a life time.

PS and the gang's journey may be over, but the adventure is always more important than the end. And that was one hell of an adventure.

Thank you, always. The series may have ended, but the laughs do not.

Thanks for such an amazing comic; this seriousy is the best webcomic I've read. I hope it was as much fun to make as it was for me to read. Thanks, and I can't wait to see what you bring us all in the future. :D

Your Work is literary mastery. I get chills when I think about how many times I've had to bring up dictionary.com while reading Problem Slueth.

I've learned less reading Terry Brook's novels. :P

Anonymous said...

Yeah, there should be another made in this style. Jail Break hasn't been clicking much with me, and I blame it on the fact that there's no endearing character development, no intricate puzzle shit, no pointless statistics, no real predetermined course or objects with predetermined use, no ridiculous amount of subplots or characters. You're just sort of wandering about with your "guys". I'd say the aforementioned factors were what made Problem Sleuth so wiggity wack.

I'm almost considering doing one of these with a local forum or something. It could get interesting.

I've been reading web-comics for a while, and I'd say that this is basically the best web-comic series I have ever read.

I STRONGLY wish for you to continue the story of the three sleuths some day and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Make it bigger, better, weirder, but different. Or at least have a spiritual successor of sorts.

Thanks for MS Paint Adventures. I hope yet more people find it.

I'm saddened by the fact that it's finally over, but at least it did. It could have just been left to rot like so many other sites, you know?

I picked up on it when VG Cats linked to it, and caught up in about two days. That was one of the greatest things I've ever read, and even better it updated often and in groups. I'm looking forward to all your future projects.

LET'S DO IT AGAIN!

Seriously, brilliant, brilliant story. Absolutely baffling in awesome. Dammit, I wish I knew more fancy words to use to try to flimsy contain the sheer awesomeness that this whole comic contained. MIND BLOWING BAFFLINGLYAWESOME. AUGH. It's like a mindgasm. A boggling timetraveling mindgasm.

You sir, are to be put up on a pedestal along next to Douglas Adams, in my opinion. Congratulations; few make it.

Last night I had one of the strangest dreams I have ever had. I dreamt of the epilogue of PROBLEM SLEUTH, and the story it painted of the events following the death of MK. A glorious teaser and cliffhanger was created when a cult of DEMONHEAD MOBSTER KINGPIN'S HAT WORSHIPERS plotted to revive the vile villain in order to pay homage to his very large hat. They brought forth items from the four corners of the real of IMAGINATION and stirred them in a big pot. After dumping several of their number in as sacrifice, thunder tore the skies in twain and DMK's wing stretched out of the giant pot of summoning. Oh, would it were true!

Anonymous said...

'Epic' exploded in the process of this marvelous story.

The player may be a winner, but the Andrew won the internet, and more.

PS may never do any more commands anymore, but he will never cease to exist.

Great scott, man! This was so much fun, I don't know what to do anymore... Get that epilogue done, quick!

I read this entire story from start to finish over two days. It is an epic story of universe scale.

Never before has there been a more terrific rendition of the creation of all matter in the universe.

If you produce this as a book, I will buy it.

Admittedly, I am not sure how you would handle the moving images.

Anonymous said...

Sir, surely gods will look apon the ending of this 'comic of epic proportions' as the saddest day of mankind. But it is a humble end, and I am glad to have been there for the majority of its length. It's finality was well brought out and I congradulate you on a job well done.-GAMEOVER-...you win.

My head swirls with black-and-white line drawings (and increasingly frequent splashes of color and sick-ass animation), though I am at an utter loss to describe the bittersweet brew of emotions roiling up from the depths of my subjective experience, having just read the entirety of the Problem Sleuth adventure in a mind-bending two-and-a-half days, coincidentally less than a month after its epic conclusion. You have challenged my cosmological beliefs at their very core, and I will never again ponder the infinitesimal without thinking of those subatomic Part-Pickle Inspectors, together weaving this beautiful fractal tapestry of existence. Alas, I missed out on the opportunity to contribute to this tale, but I hope your next project will provide similar possibilities....
